The mailing says South Africa's State of Emergency is well into its second year. The apartheid state is steadily increasing its repression, and - to attempt to mask the actions of the police, the military, vigilante squads and the enormous battery of implements it possesses - is pursuing an even greater censorship effort to prevent South Africans and the world populace from learning the extent of its depredations. The mailing includes a leaflet of The Africa Fund's Unlock Apartheid's Jails campaign. The mailing includes part of a document by the Detainees' Parents Support Committee that includes a list of persons in detention as at 31 July 1987. The mailing asks people to fill out, sign and send in the enclosed post card addressed to President P. W. Botha to the Lawyers Committee in Washington. The mailing asks people to Join the Africa Fund's Unlock Apartheid's Jails campaign by signing the enclosed form and sending in keys which will be deposited with the South African embassy in Washington. The mailing asks people to choose a name (or names) and send a letter demanding that person's (those persons') unconditional release to: State President P. W. Botha. The mailing asks people to write to President Ronald Reagan Calling on him to demand the detainees' release; send copies of your letters to your Senators and Representatives. The mailing discusses the Internal Security Act (ISA), the Bophuthatswana Internal Security Act, the Venda Maintenance of Law and Order Act, security detentions, the Ciskei National Security Act, the Transkei Public Safety Act, SARHWU (South African Rail ways and Harbour Workers Union), UWC (University of Western Cape), SANSCO (South African National Students Council), RMC (Release Mandela Committee), AZAPO, AYCO, Paper Wood and Allied Workers, UDF (United Democratic Front), President P.W. Botha, Free South Africa's Children, and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
