Soweto Day program at Mt. Zion Baptist Church marking the 11th anniversary of Soweto Day on June 16, 1987. The program includes Introductions - Irene Hull; M.C. - Bernice Jones; Invocation - Rev. L.J. Thompson, Ebenezer AME Zion Church; Young People's Choir - Gloria Johnson, Director, Ebenezer AME Zion Church; Inge Zaamwani, Community Extension Worker of the South West African People's Organization (SWAPO); Bill Corr, Labor Committee Against Apartheid; Thuthukile Radebe, African National Congress (ANC) Women's Section; and Benediction - Rev. Jerry Landers, Cherry Hill Baptist Church. Sponsors are the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), Women for Racial and Economic Equality, and Puget Sound Chapter of the Coalition of Labor Union Women. The program points out that about 700 people were killed in June 1076 when thousands of black students in the township of Soweto took to the streets to protest against oppressive racist education. Young people continue to resist and are facing the full terror of the apartheid police state. The program says tens of thousands of people have been detained since 1984, a quarter or more of whom are children between 5 and 16, who have been beaten and tortured. An international campaign is underway to force the regime to "release the children" and to stop the killing. The program says artwork is coordinated by the Seattle Coalition Against Apartheid.
