The mailing says that June 16 marks the ninth anniversary of the massacre of 1,000 students who were peacefully demonstrating against Afrikaans being the medium of instruction in South Africa's inferior "Bantu" education system. Black South Africans regard June 16 as "Heroes Day." June 16 falls on a Sunday, an excellent time for religious leaders to preach about the moral evils of apartheid and to ask their congregations to donate to organizations such as the American Friends Service Committee and the American Committee on Africa for South African refugees. Bishop Desmond Tutu, father of the author, encourages people of faith to commemorate June 16th.
