The mailing says the national Southern Africa Program of the American Friends Service Committee is beginning a postcard campaign urging the U.S. government to recognize Angola, following the MPLA government's having won a democratically conducted election that the United Nations, Amnesty International, and a number of other observer organizations declared free and fair. The opposition, led be UNITA and supported by the South African government, rejected the election results and have renewed the war against the government. More than 20,000 people have been killed in the battle for Huambo alone. The mailing includes a post card to President Clinton.
