ACAS urges people to write President Clinton and other members of the Executive and Congress demanding that the U.S. recognize the government in Angola that won United Nations-supervised elections and support multilateral efforts to restore peace. The UN estimates more than 10,000 people died in Angola in January and early February, and 1.5 million are threatened with starvation as a result of renewed fighting. Although Jonas Savimbi's UNITA forces control 60% of the territory as of mid-February, the MPLA-led government forces will likely continue to hold the capitol and other key areas. For more than two decades, ACAS members have sought to reverse U.S. policies that prolonged the war in Angola and has opposed U.S. assistance to Portuguese colonialism, CIA support for South African invasions, and hundreds of millions of dollars in covert arms shipments to Savimbi. Now the Cold War is over and South Africa has been defeated in Angola and Namibia. Angola has held democratic elections, judged free and fair by both the U.N. and the U.S. The MPLA won overwhelmingly in the September parliamentary election, and Eduardo dos Santos won 49.57% of the vote for the presidency (Savimbi polled 40.97%). The dos Santos government charges South Africa and Zaire with intervening to support Savimbi's war. The U.S. should press these countries to stay out of the Angolan conflict.
