Educational leaflet about the South African labor movement and the newly-formed, militant Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU). Recognition of COSATU and respect for its struggle is the first consideration in aiding South African labor. The leaflet says COSATU elected Elijah Barayi, of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM-SA) as President; Chris Dlamini of the Sweet, Food and Allied Workers Union as First Vice-President; Makhulu Lidwaba of the Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers' Union of South Africa as Second Vice-President; Jay Naidoo of the Sweet, Food and Allied Workers' Union as General Secretary; Sidney Mafumadi of the General and Allied Workers' Union as Assistant General Secretary; and Maxwell Xulu of the Metal and Allied Workers' Union as Treasurer. At its launch conference, COSATU demanded the repeal of the pass laws, immediate lifting of the State of Emergency, withdrawal of the racist troops from the township, unconditional release of Nelson Mandela and all political prisoners and detainees, repeal of orders restricting individuals and outlawing organizations, dismantling of the Bantustan system, and an end to the migrant labor system. A report by the United Nations Special Committee against Apartheid discusses the visit of Chief Gatsha Buthelezi to Israel; the Israeli Government used the occasion to show its concern for blacks in South Africa, while reiterating its opposition to sanctions against the apartheid government. The leaflet asks whether Black South Africans trained in Israel by the Hisadrut program will be supporting the program of COSATU or a racially exclusive union grouping like Buthelezi's United Workers Union of South Africa (UWUSA). The leaflet says SACTU, the South African Congress of Trade Union, is a banned multi-racial union federation that is an important part of COSATU.
