The mailing says the African National Congress (ANC), South Africa's oldest anti-apartheid organization, has called for 1990 to be the "Year of People's Action for a Democratic South Africa." Recent events in South Africa remind us that the struggle for freedom and racial justice (as in the United States) is not over and that constant pressure on the apartheid regime is needed in order for real liberation to occur. The mailing says the apartheid regime has announced that Nelson Mandela will be released "soon." Democratic change in South Africa will occur only through continued international pressure; economic sanctions should not be eased now. The mailing asks people to write Speaker of the House Tom Foley and to Senator Claiborne Pell, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to urge their support for H.R. 21/S. 507, the comprehensive mandatory economic sanctions legislation languishing before the Congress. The mailing discusses Rev. Frank Chikane (General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches), President De Klerk, Steve Biko, Albert Luthuli, the Defiance Campaign, and the Mass Democratic Movement. [Note on date: FW de Klerk announced Nelson Mandela would be released from prison on February 2, 1990 and Mandela was released on February 11.]
