Statement by physicians publicly condemning the gross violation of human and health rights in South Africa. The statement discusses homelands, measles, polio, tuberculosis, dehydration, and vaccination. It also expresses concern about South Africa's attacks on Mozambique, Namibia, Angola, Swaziland, Lesotho, and now Botswana. South Africa organized and continues to support an anti-government army in Mozambique that has burned fields, machine-gunned buses and trains, and tortured and killed government education and health workers. The statement criticizes the Reagan administration for its support of that government, making the U.S. complicit with apartheid. The presence of the South African Consulate in Seattle is a symbol of further complicity with this outlaw government. We cannot with good conscience sit idly in the face of this complicity with evil; over 200 individuals have been arrested demanding the closure of this odious symbol.
