The leaflet reports that, on July 20, South African President Pieter Botha imposed a sweeping state of emergency in 36 towns and cities in response to the growing resistance to apartheid in Black townships. Following the call of the African National Congress (ANC) to make the townships "ungovernable," Blacks have been engaged in continual mass protests. The United Democratic Front (UDF), a coalition of some 600 organizations representing some three million Asians, Coloureds and Blacks, is the main legal vehicle for the current wave of protest. The leaflet says the Seattle Coalition Against Apartheid, and many other groups across the country affiliated with the Free South Africa Movement, supports the struggle of the Black majority of South Africa for democracy and national liberation and opposes the U.S. government's policy of constructive engagement with apartheid and U.S. corporate investment in the apartheid economy. The leaflet asks people to call or write their electoral representatives including President Reagan, Sen. Slade Gorton, and Sen. Daniel Evans and to attend weekly pickets at the South Africa Consulate. • APARTHEID GETS DESPERATE... • THE PEOPLE ORGANIZED • SUPPORT THE FREEDOM STRUGGLE • WHAT YOU CAN DO
