The newsletter reports on preliminary talks between Morocco and the Polisario Front carried out through the offices of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the United Nations (UN) under the guidance of resolutions 40/50 of the UN (1985) and 104 of the OAU (1983), which set out a peace plan to end the war in Western Sahara. The newsletter says Congress has before it HR 2887 which calls for a monument from Morocco's King Hassan to be installed in Washington, D.C. The Campaign has organized a clothing drive for Sahrawi refugees with local groups, churches, and individuals. The newsletter discusses the Africa Peace Tour, which addressed the connection between hunger and war in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Southern Africa, Chad, Sudan, and Western Sahara. The newsletter reports that the Campaign wrote to Princess Stephanie of Monaco about French Television's intent to film Stephanie: From A to Z in El Ayoun. The Campaign hosted a second annual reception at the Church Center for the United Nations on June 3 for the benefit of the Sahrawi people; over 200 people attended and heard speeches by the American Committee on Africa, the North American Chapter of the International League for the Rights and Liberation of Peoples, the National Conference of Black Lawyers, and the Western Sahara Campaign. On April 26th, 1986 the Sahrawi Republic, member of the Organization of African Unity, became the 20th African nation to ratify the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights. The newsletter includes the text of a letter to the Editor of New York magazine from John G. Healey, Executive Director, Amnesty International, USA. It also includes a letter to the editor from Peter Winders concerning the armed forces of the Congolese National Liberation Front (FNLC) entering the mineral-rich Shaba province of Zaire on March 8, 1977. It says that Morocco sent 1,500 troops to Shaba, flown in by the French air force, to defeat the FNLC uprising and discusses Mobutu Sese Seko.
