The newsletter reports on a series of talks among Cuba, Angola, South Africa and the United States about South Africa's invasions of Angola and Namibian independence. The South African Defence Force has been made to pull back from sectors of its invasion lines in Angola, having failed to take the Angolan government's airbase town of Cuito Cuanavale. South Africa has lost mastery of the air over southern Angola and has suffered a record number of causalities - both black Namibians in the so-called South West Africa Territorial Force and white South African conscripts. The newsletter discusses SWAPO, the African National Congress, UNITA, and Jonas Savambi. It reports on the death of Sean MacBride and his time as the United Nations Commissioner for Namibia. The newsletter includes the report of the World Council of Churches (WCC) hearing on Namibia. Hearing panel members were His Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria; Lisbeth Palme, Sweden; Howard Cooke, Jamaica; and The Reverend Karl Mau, U.S.A. The WCC hearing report notes that May 4, 1988 marked the tenth anniversary of the Kassinga massacre in which South African troops killed more than 600 Namibian refugees. 1988 also is the tenth anniversary of UN Resolution 435 demanding an end to South Africa's illegal occupation of Namibia and UN-supervises elections. The report also discusses SWAPO, Decree No. 1 and sanctions. The newsletter asks people to contact their U.S. Senators and Representative to support the comprehensive sanctions legislation (HR 1580 and S 2378).
