This fundraising mailing says the past year saw a tremendous leap forward, both in the struggle inside South Africa and in this country. This fundraising mailing says the past year saw a tremendous leap forward, both in the struggle inside South Africa and in this country. The Free South Africa Movement ignited the spark of mass opposition to apartheid in the U.S., and the increased visibility of the apartheid issue led the international community to intensify its opposition to the Botha regime. The mailing says 1986 marks ten years since the Soweto massacre, in which close to a thousand school children were brutally murdered by the South African government. It also is 20 years since South Africa took illegal control of Namibia and 25 years since the African National Congress (ANC) launched the armed struggle. These important dates must be used to remind the American public of the terror of apartheid and to bring home to them the South African people's many years of courageous resistance. The formation of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is an exciting event. Also, Bishop Tutu has announced that the churches will call for an economic boycott. The situation in South Africa has worsened considerably under the State of Emergency. The mailing also discusses Jonas Savimbi's visit to the U.S. and the need for intensified lobbying efforts to defeat legislation to fund UNITA and to prevent further covert aid.
