Mailing consisting of a cover letter and an action alert. The letter says the South African government has escalated its regional destabilization, including recent unprovoked attacks on Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Angola. The Congress must be pressured to impose comprehensive economic sanctions against South Africa such as those contained in HR 997 introduced by Ron Dellums (D-CA). The action alert says that a bi-partisan group of House and Senate anti-apartheid activists introduced the "Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986" on May 21. The new bills would ban new investment in South Africa; ban new loans to the South African public sector; prohibit U.S. involvement in South African energy development; ban imports of South Africa coal, steel, and uranium; deny landing rights to South African aircraft; and allocate $25 million per year for South African and Namibian refugee education and community development programs selected in consultation with "representative leaders of South Africans disadvantaged by apartheid." The bill also would require disinvestment from South African computer industry. The action alert says passing this legislation could send a signal to Pretoria that U.S. patience with apartheid is running out. The action alert asks people to contact members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, encourage their representative to co-sponsor HR 997, write the Democratic leadership of the House, and urge their Senators to introduced companion legislation to HR 997. • Press Conference Launches New Sanctions Bill • Dellums Disinvestment Bill Should Be Passed • New Bill Expected to Move Quickly • House Committee on Foreign Affairs • Summary of HR 4868 / S 2498
