Press release, statement and letter to the Board of Trustees of Michigan State University. The press release says in a December statement, the Coalition for Peace and Justice, Catholic Diocese of Lansing, citing the plight of Blacks in South Africa, Rhodesia and Namibia, calls for the withdrawal of U.S. corporations operating in those countries; the group supports Michigan House Bill #6341 which would prohibit educational institutions of the state from investing in corporations that have substantial operations in, or do business with South Africa and possibly other countries where discrimination is legally required; Fr. Peter Dougherty of E. Lansing, a member of the Coalition, praised the stand taken by the Board of Trustees of Michigan State University which has chosen to divest itself of investments in all corporations doing business in South Africa. The statement says while we in Michigan have no direct power to change racist government policies in these countries, we do have, through our corporations and banks, an enormous influence; this U.S. investment bolsters the racist system by strengthening the nation's economy, and thus aids in the maintenance of racist policies; we believe it is a moral responsibility of corporations operating in these countries to withdraw their current business operations, wherein profitability is derived from economic factors which exist in large part due to a repressive and discriminatory political system; we support Michigan House Bill 6341 which would prohibit educational institutions of the state from investing in corporations that have substantial operations in, or do business with S. Africa and possibly other countries where discrimination is legally required. The statement discusses apartheid, Rhodesia, Namibia (Southwest Africa), Bantustans, pass laws, U.S. corporations, bank loans, religious groups and denominations, the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, and divestment. The letter to the Board of Trustees says the Coalition for Peace and Justice, Catholic Diocese of Lansing, congratulate you on the firm stand that you have taken to divest of stock in companies that do business in South Africa.
