Action Alert on possible U.S. support for UNITA. The mailing reports that in July 1985 the Clark Amendment (which prohibited any U.S. overt or covert intervention in Angola) was repealed by Congress opening the door to U.S. military intervention in Angola once more and that in October and November there was a flurry of Congressional initiatives launched to provide overt aid to UNITA, the South African supported rebel group in Angola. The mailing says the Reagan Administration is attempting to by-pass the legislative process and provide direct military aid to Jonas Savimbi's UNITA rebels in their efforts to topple the Angolan government. The mailing says there are four dangerous Angola specific bills pending in the House of Representatives (HR 3472 introduced by Representative Claude Pepper, HR 3606 introduced by Representative Mark Siljander, HR 3598 introduced by Representative Bob McCollum, HR 3725 introduced by Representative Bob Dornan). The mailing reports that Congressman Ted Weiss has introduced HR 3690 which would prevent any U.S. covert or overt aid to Angola. The mailing asks people to send letters in protest of the dangerous Angola legislation (HR 3472, 3606, 3598, and 3725) and in support of HR 3690. The mailing reports an Internal Policy Review submitted by the National Security establishment, the CIA, Pentagon, and National Security Council urged covert military assistance for Savimbi's UNITA guerillas. The mailing reports that Chester Crocker is presently engaged in talks with Angola's Interior Minister Manuel Duarte Rodrigues.
