The document says the Organization of Mozambican Women (OMM) was founded in 1973, two years before independence. Women played important roles in the struggle, from combat to leading political organizations. After independence, OMM strategized about how to incorporate the liberation of women into the new Mozambique, and it helped to organize production, health care, and education to encourage women's full participation. With relevant ministries, the OMM is working to promote mother and child health programs, in literacy programs, in building temporary housing for people displaced from their land, and organizing programs to help children traumatized by the war. OMM has organized a variety of programs, including agricultural, sewing and brickmaking cooperatives and bakeries. The Christian Council of Mozambique (CCM) has a membership of 17 denominations, including some African independent churches. Church World Service (CWS) has worked with the Council for many years to help with emergency assistance, including distributing seeds, tools, household implements, clothing, blankets and medicine to some of the 3.3 million people displaced by the war. CCM's rehabilitation efforts include developing agricultural and water resources, rebuilding clinics and developing primary healthcare programs, building schools, and setting up a training center at Matola. CCM tries to purchase materials and emergency supplies locally when possible. CCM's Peace Initiative is trying to bring an end to the war through negotiations. Nearly 80% of Mozambique's 14.5 million people live in the countryside, two-thirds of whom are subsistence farmers. South Africa has an iron grip on the economy of the region, making a $108 million surplus with the Frontline states.
