The cover letter says the Lutheran Coalition on Southern Africa is giving American Lutheran Church (ALC) members an opportunity to sign an open letter in order to make a collective statement to the ALC Church Council, which will make critical decisions about implementing the 1980 General Convention's resolution on "Opposition to Apartheid" at its next meeting. The open letter says the signers are deeply troubled by the U.S. government's increasing support for South Africa. It notes the United States' recent veto of U.N. economic sanctions against South Africa despite lack of significant progress on a settlement in Namibia and the Reagan Administration's pushing for repeal of the Clark Amendment, which prohibits intervention in Angola. The letter also calls on the Church Council to a) adopt the Office of Church in Society's proposed "Goals for Combating Apartheid Through The ALC and Its Members," b) encourage and support the Board of Trustees as they implement their new policy on South Africa-related investments, and c) request that the Trustees issue periodic progress reports on implementing this policy.
