This article is excerpts from a statement by Timothy Smith at the stockholder meeting of Bristol-Myers in May 1989 in which he argued that withdrawing from South Africa is in the company's financial and business interest. Smith pointed out that Mobil had decided to withdraw from South Africa and end all indirect ties and that Rev. Leon Sullivan has called for abandoning the Sullivan Principles and withdrawing. Smith points to ways in which investment in South Africa is becoming less profitable and the growth of the divestment movement and selective purchasing campaigns in cities and states in the U.S. [Note: The article is from The Corporate Examiner (Vol. 18, No.3).]
