1988
2 pages
This document notes recent national and local church endorsements of the Shell Boycott and notes that the first church endorser was the Unitarian Universalists Association in June 1986. The Brief contains excerpts of an influential statement in May 1988 by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in which he called for economic sanctions against apartheid and withdrawal of foreign corporations. There also are excerpts from endorsement resolutions by bodies of the United Church of Christ and United Methodist Church. The Executive Council of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the U.S.S. also has joined the boycott following Tutu's statement. Shell produces sold in the U.S. are listed.
