The brochure explains the proclamation of independence by the Republic of Guinea-Bissau and creation of the 120-member People's National Assembly. Sixty-nine countries recognized this government within one month, but the U.S. continues to support Portugal, both because of its commitments to NATO and because of its economic stake in southern Africa. The Committee to Support the Republic of Guinea-Bissau has begun a campaign to encourage the people of the U.S. to recognize the new African government.
