Report on a visit to Washington, D.C. by members of a Rochester delegation of clergy and academics who were denied visas by South African government after efforts of nearly 18 months. Six of the 11 members of the group spent a day visiting U.S. Senators, Representatives, State Department officers, church organization leaders, and an aide at the South African Embassy to register their continuing concern about U.S. relations with South Africa, conditions in southern Africa, and the right to travel as a sine qua non of informed citizenship. The group discussed several policy issues, including that the Congress retain the Clark Amendment prohibiting CIA involvement in Angola; that the Reagan administration and Congress consider the Rockefeller Foundation-funded study South Africa: Time Running Out; that all U.S. Government leaders be unequivocal in the condemnation of apartheid; and that the U.S. demonstrate its profound opposition to apartheid through such actions as sanctions, embargoes, disinvestment, and divestment.
