Letter to Gary A. Zimmerman, Chair, Metro Council, opposing proposed Resolution No. 5597. The letter says that while claiming to broaden Metro's anti-apartheid policy the proposal seems to weaken existing policy by allowing leeway for Metro's Executive Director to buy and use products from any source if, in his or her opinion, federal grant money is at risk. The letter says the Metro policy should forbid the use of South African diamonds in the diamond pins that Metro uses for awards. The letter says H.R. 21 in the House of Representatives seeks to close loopholes of the Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986 and if it is enacted federal guidelines are likely to change.
