Contents: Sullivan Principles - 10 Year Later • Rhode Island Moves Toward Total Divestment • Sanctions Bill in Congress • The newsletter reports the announcement by Rev. Leon Sullivan that he was abandoning the ten-year-old "Sullivan Principles" regarding U.S. corporations' investments in South Africa. The newsletter says In the wake of Rev. Sullivan's renunciation, Rep. Ray Rickman (D, Prov.) and Rep. Ray Fogarty (D, Glocester) introduced a bill (H 9114) to amend the existing partial divestment law by eliminating exclusions based on the "Sullivan Principles." The newsletter reports the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence recently agreed to sell its shares in companies that do business in South Africa, revising its partial divestment position. The newsletter says Rep. Ronald Dellums and Sen. Alan Cranston have introduced comprehensive sanctions bills against South Africa one again; the bill, H.R. 1580 and S. 556, are very similar to the comprehensive sanctions bill which Dellums sponsored in 1986 and passed by a voice vote in the House of Representatives; unfortunately, the sanctions bill that eventually arrived at President Reagan's desk was not as strong, yet he still vetoed it; nevertheless, Congress handed the President his first major foreign policy reprimand, by overriding the veto. The newsletter asks people to call Senators Pell and Chaffee and urge them to support and co-sponsor S. 556. The newsletter asks people to call Representatives Schneider and St. Germain to get their support and co-sponsorship of H.R. 1580. The newsletter discusses Joseph Newsome and Prudence Mashile.
