The draft letter says I have accepted the chairmanship of the Committee of Conscience Against Apartheid formed by the American Committee on Africa in cooperation with the National Student Christian Federation; this committee plans to carry on a campaign for the next six months, appealing to both individuals and organizations to withdraw their accounts from the First National City Bank and Chase Manhattan Bank. The draft letter says we have initiated the campaign because we believe it is of the utmost importance that Americans withdraw economic support from South Africa, whose regime is carrying on a policy of vicious racism, called apartheid. The draft letter says perhaps you will recall reading in the press about a demonstration on April 20th, when some 300 people marched in a dignified fashion to the First National City Bank branch at 111th Street and Broadway; this project had been initiated by students at Union Theological Seminary, joined by students and faculty from Jewish Theological Seminary, Columbia University and Barnard College. The draft letter says I am writing to ask if you will join me as a sponsor of this campaign.
