The mailing says this is my first Global Advocates alert since my election to the post of Regional Secretary for Africa; I bring to my work at the Board a history of human rights advocacy and a familiarity with the political system in the United States. The mailing says UCBWM has worked in Angola with Angolan Christians since 1880. The mailing says our work has for many years been disrupted by war: first the resistance to Portuguese colonialism; then, conflict between the major movements for the liberation of Angola. The mailing says today, the conflict continues between the Angolan government and the National Union for the Total Liberation of Angola (UNITA). The mailing says UCBWM works with the Church on both sides of the political divide in Angola and with refugees outside of Angola; the Church in Angola and the UCC still pray for peace and reconciliation in that country. The mailing says we ask that Members of Congress reject the proposals that aid be given to UNITA; such aid can only increase the death and destruction in Angola and prolong the violence; additionally, UNITA has received support from the government of South Africa. Aid to UNITA would place the United States firmly on the side of South Africa's foreign policy objectives - destabilization in the region. The mailing says please work to oppose government aid, whether described as military, non-lethal, covert or humanitarian; we suggest that you write your Congressperson, and members of the House Africa Subcommittee of Foreign Affairs Committee.
