This letter solicited donations for books and other educational materials for Mozambique. The assistance is to support the Mozambican government's massive campaign to insure that all its citizens have access to education, in the face of a 95% illiteracy rate at the time of independence in 1975. In four years, the number of children attending schools has increased from several hundred thousand to more than 1.7 million. The mailing includes a copy of a letter from Graça Machel, Minister for Education and Culture of Mozambique, thanking the Mozambique Education Fund for its work, including $5,000 for the library of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
