The United Methodist Committee on Relief of the General Board of Global Ministries issued an urgent request for emergency relief for Mozambique, including food, children's clothing, medicine and medical equipment. UMCOR already has sent more than $200,000 in relief, and other Methodist units have sent clothing and medicines. The major problem is not drought or floods, but war. People cannot harvest crops they have planted because of indiscriminate violence of the rebels. Also, at least 1.2 million people have been displaced within Mozambique and another 400,000 have crossed the borders to southern Malawi, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
