Mailing about deaths in detention in South Africa, includes a poem by black poet James Matthews, who is now himself detained. The causes of death stated by the security police are a mockery of the truth - Haron "fell down stairs"; N. Kgosthe "slipped in shower"; A. Timol committed "suicide" by jumping through the 10th floor window of the police interrogation center. The recent deaths of Soweto student J. Maghabane and trade unionist L. Mazwembe were termed "suicide by hanging." The laws allow detainees to be kept incommunicado indefinitely, without explanation, without being charged, without access to a lawyer, to family, priest or doctor.
