The statement says the American Committee on Africa deeply regrets the United States government's denial of a visa to Hanrique Galvao, which will keep Galvao from addressing the Africa Freedom Day meeting in New York. The statement says Galvao is an opponent of the Salazar regime in Portugal who was imprisoned by the Portuguese government for his report in 1947 exposing forced labor in Portugal's colonies. He received a l5-year sentence, but he escaped after serving eight years. His capture of the liner, Santa Maria, highlighted his opposition to the Salazar government.
