Statement by Sam Nujoma expressing thanks to EEC member countries for humanitarian and educational assistance to the Namibian people. Nujoma says that, while SWAPO is convinced that Namibia's independence cannot be delayed indefinitely, prospects for early implementation of the U.N. Plan for the decolonization of Namibia are looking bleak. Disregarding the wishes of the Namibian people and resolutions of the international community, apartheid South Africa is bent on imposing its own Bantustan version of independence on Namibia. Nujoma says because of the decision by the Reagan Administration to hold up Namibia's independence and to use it as a bargain card, the process of bringing Namibia to independence through a negotiated settlement is at a virtual stand-still. Nujoma says the delegation of the British Council of Churches that visited Namibia from November 16-28, 1981 confirmed that a very brutal reign of terror exists in Namibia today. Nujoma says a delegation of the South African Council of Churches led by Bishop Desmond Tutu and Reverend Peter Storey visited Namibia. Nujoma discusses the churches in Namibia, including the Council of Churches in Namibia, and the issue of Cubans in Angola.
