Berit Hagen Agøy visited South Africa in 1986. From 1987 to 1991 she worked on Southern Africa at the Council on Ecumenical and International Relations of Church of Norway and as advisory to the Secretary General on South Africa. From 1991-1994 she headed the Development Education Service of the Church of Norway. From 1994-1997 she worked at the Norwegian Human Rights Fund. She wrote her thesis on attitudes toward apartheid among Norwegian missionaries in South Africa.
