Rhode Island Divest was a statewide coalition that supported bills in the state legislature to divest state pension funds from companies doing business in South Africa in 1985. Rhode Island Divest also supported federal sanctions against South Africa; Joseph Newsome of the Rhode Island Divest testified in support of such legislation in June 1988. In November 1990 Rhode Island Divest organized a conference on "U.S. Foreign Policy and Africa." The chairpersons were Joseph Newsome and Prudence Mashile.
