According to a brochure of the organization, “the Chicago Support Committee worked with various organizations on issues concerning South Africa, especially the Coalition for Illinois Divestment in South Africa ... In November of 1984, the TransAfrica Chicago Support Committee and Dr. Cheryl Johnson-Odim, its second chairperson, spearheaded the formation of the Free South Africa Movement in Chicago in coalition with Black nationalist, civil rights, labor, political and religious organizations.” The Support Committee also received support from Black elected officers.
