The South African Action Group (SAAG) campaigned to get Lewis and Clark College to divest from the Common Fund which had investments in companies doing business in apartheid South Africa. In the spring of 1986, rallies, lobbying trustees, and a teach-in were organized, and some students fasted for five days starting on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday to demand divestment. In October 1988, 100 students took over the board room where the trustees were to meet in October 1988, and the trustees unexpectedly voted to divest in secret in another room.
