In the spring of 1985, the Committee on Apartheid Education was formed to launch an educational campaign on the campus of George State University (GSU). The Student Government Association had adopted a bill to hold a referendum of the student body calling on the administration to make public a list of the University's transactions with banks and corporations doing business with South Africa and calling for divestment from these companies. The referendum received 60% support, but with only five percent of students participating. The Committee on Apartheid Education then pressed the Student Government to release the information about investments that it had received. In the fall of 1985, the group changed its focus to the Georgia Board of Regents to push them to make a decision to divest, and it reached out to students on six other state-supported universities. In November, 1985, the Board of Regents voted to continue to invest in companies that endorsed the Sullivan Principles. (Source: “South to Freedom?
