The Centro Informazione e Educazione Allo Sviluppo (CIES, Centre for Information and Development Education), was an Italian NGO. In 1986 CIES launched a campaign in support of the African National Congress (ANC) and also with the purpose to collect funds for the exiled ANC communities in Mazimbu and Dakawa (SOMAFCO school) in Tanzania. The founding members of our CIES (Elisabetta Etta- Melandri, Vanni Rinaldi, Antonio Chiappetta and the photographer Riccardo Sabbadini) had travelled in 1983 to Southern African countries and especially visited the ANC officials in Zambia and the school/community in Tanzania and the SWAPO health and educational center in Kwanza Sul, Angola. As a first result of that visit CIES published a bilingual photographic book "Building freedom - the challenge of the ANC and of SWAPO" with the financial support of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees; the book had introductions by Oliver Tambo and Sam Nujoma and was the first clear description of the South African and Namibian situation under apartheid to appear in Italy. CIES contributed to giving birth, in 1985, to the Italian anti-apartheid movement, involving Institutions, political parties, NGOs, Trade Unions and grass rout associations at national level. CIES worked especially in schools and with local communities to sensitize and inform the public and in particular young people about the apartheid situation.
