Ames Divest was formed no later than 1982. Ames Divest was a student group at Iowa State University (ISU) that worked to get ISU to divest from companies doing business in South Africa. Another key activity during these early years was to set up a South African student scholarship fund using payroll deduction from ISU faculty and staff. ISU divested from companies doing business in South Africa in 1985. About 1985 or 1986 the name was changed or the organization became the Ames Coalition Against Apartheid.
