The Coalition, based in California, aimed to build a boycott campaign against Del Monte by unifying people concerned about Del Monte's numerous oppressive practices. Organizers that were part of the anti-apartheid movement participated because of Del Monte's overfishing of sardines off Namibia's coast, which led to a call for a boycott of the company by the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO). The Filipino community in California called attention to Del Monte's practices in the Philippines. The Coalition also sought to work with the Cannery Workers Organization Committee which was demanding improved working conditions in their workplaces in California. The primary Africa solidarity organizations involved were the Los Angeles-based Southern Africa Support Committee and the Bay Area Namibia Action Group (BA-NAG); see the descriptions and documents of those organizations.
