South Indiana United Methodists and Others In Support of Southern Africans (SUMOSSA) was organized in 1981 by a group of South Indiana United Methodists that felt that the apartheid system was contrary to the gospel of Jesus Christ and they believed that Christians around the world must demonstrate the unity of the church in their rejection of apartheid. SUMOSSA organized direct assistance to people in Southern Africa, monitored U.S. policy and lobbied members of Congress, supported campaigns against bank loans to South Africa and divestment, and educated people in South Indiana about the apartheid system. SUMOSSA initiated a Panty Project, an effort to provide panties to women in Namibian refugee camps in Angola. SUMOSSA's Investment Task Force campaigned for the General Board of Pensions to divest from companies doing business in South Africa.
