The Student Coalition Against Apartheid and Racism (SCAAR) was a student group at the University of Florida that was formed in April 1985. SCAAR campaigned for a state-wide policy of full divestment from companies doing business in South Africa by Florida's state universities including the University of Florida at Gainesville. SCAAR educated and mobilized the University of Florida campus and the Gainesville community. SCAAR activities which publicized the situation in South Africa included teach-ins, rallies and direct actions that resulted in arrests. SCAAR mobilized more than 30 representatives of local and national organizations to testify to the Gainesville City Commission in favor of divestment of city pension funds from companies doing business in South Africa. SCAAR worked at both the state and national levels for the strongest possible actions to end apartheid and to help the people of southern Africa achieve political and economic freedom. SCAAR sponsored programs in Gainesville by the Africa Peace Tour.
