The Committee to Oppose Bank Loans to South Africa (COBLSA) was formed in 1977. In 1979 the name was changes to Campaign to Oppose Bank Loans to South Africa (COBLSA). COBLSA was initiated by The American Committee on Africa (ACOA), Clergy and Laity Concerned (CALC) and the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). ACOA and CALC were the national sponsors. Nearly 50 organizations nationally participated in the campaign. It operated out of the ACOA office. The first coordinators were Prexy Nesbitt of ACOA and Gene Jones of CALC. On June 1, 1979 Dumisani Kumalo became national coordinator. About 1981 Carole Collins, an associate fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies, became the national coordinator and COBLSA moved out of the ACOA office to Washington, DC..
