The Lutheran Coalition on Southern Africa (LCSA), a grassroots coalition of congregations and organizations, was formed in 1979 to change the policies of the Lutheran churches regarding Southern Africa. LCSA worked to get the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) and the American Lutheran Church (ALC) to divest from all corporations doing business in South Africa. LCSA also worked to have the LCA and ALC declare apartheid “status confessionis” meaning that the churches would publicly and unequivocally reject the apartheid system.
