Art Against Apartheid was an independent, multiracial and politically diverse coalition of artists working in the United States, who were committed to democratic ideals and principles of racial equality. Out of this commitment, the organization’s members felt responsible to speak out, through their art, against institutionalized racial discrimination in South Africa-the apartheid system. Its goal was to raise the consciousness of Americans about the inherent evil and practical effects of apartheid through the media of art and culture. It also had offices in Los Angeles, California (c/o Unity in Action); Dallas, Texas; and Winona, Minnesota. (Source: 1984 Art Against Apartheid poster.)
