Founded by Deborah Robinson, International Possibilities Unlimited (IPU) was a non-profit organization that sought to find creative and innovating approaches to address problems faced by people of color in the African diaspora. IPU was a multi-racial organization composed primarily by students at the University of Michigan. From 1985-1991 the main activity was the South African Political Prisoner Bracelet Program. The program involved people wearing a bracelet in solidarity with one of the then life prisoners in South Africa until he/she was released and writing to their families. The objects of the South African Political Prisoners program was to raise people’s consciousness about apartheid, educate the public about the plight of political prisoners, and to be a catalyst for people to develop a personal attachment with a particular political prisoner and his or her family.
