Unity in Action in Los Angeles was an outgrowth of the Unity in Action Network formed on United Nations Day on October 24, 1982. Unity in Action was a coalition of groups and individuals. When is began Unity in Action focused on coordinating Africa-oriented organizations around a program of action, principally in support of the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa, SWAPO of Namibia and FLNC of Democratic Republic of Congo/Zaire. About 1985, Unity in Action concentrated primarily on the struggle in South Africa, organizing anti-apartheid demonstrations and mobilizing support for the ANC. Unity in Action worked to enforce the cultural boycott of South Africa, divestment from companies doing business in South Africa, and the closure of the South African consulate in Beverly Hills. Unity in Action's core membership was drawn primarily from the working class African (Black) community of South Los Angeles, with some continental Africans and person of European ethnic origin.
