The Third World Women's Alliance (TWWA) grew from a Black women's caucus within the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee in the late 1960's. TWWA established a chapter in Oakland, California in 1971. In Oakland chapter committees included Education and Employment (anti-racist work against the Weber case); Health (coalition work organized to fight infant mortality in East Oakland); and International Solidarity (Southern Africa solidarity work and material aid campaign). From its beginnings in the bay area, the TWWA consisted of Asian, Black, and Raza sisters with a variety of life experiences and backgrounds. TWWA was committed to political activism to transform the society. (Source: TWWA material on this website and
