The Lawyers Campaign to Free Nelson Mandela was formed in San Francisco in response to the national campaign to free Nelson Mandela. The Lawyers Campaign to Free Nelson Mandela obtained many attorney endorsements and published full page statements locally and in South Africa, sent letters to South African judges and hosted visiting South African activists. Working with the San Francisco Bay Area National Lawyers Guild, the Lawyers Campaign to Free Nelson Mandela designed and sponsored a billboard campaign with six billboards that went up in February 1989 in San Francisco with vivid images designed to keep images of apartheid in the public eye. The Lawyers Campaign to Free Nelson Mandela also worked with multiple other bay area anti-apartheid groups to get San Francisco and other cities to declare apartheid a crime against humanity and prohibit city officials from meeting with representatives of South Africa.
