The Northern California-Nevada Council of Churches was formed in 1942. The name changed over the years to the Northern California-Western Nevada Council of Churches, then the Northern California Council of Churches. It reorganized and was renamed the Northern California Ecumenical Council (NCEC) in 1972, and again reorganized under the name Northern California Interreligious Conference in 2000. NCEC was involved in various anti-apartheid campaigns and supported churches in South Africa and Namibia. NCEC campaigned to get Crocker Bank to stop investing in South Africa (1978-1979) and to get Chevron to divest from South Africa (1985-1987).
