The Free South Africa Fund was sent up as part of a campaign to get Stanford University to divest from companies doing business in apartheid South Africa. The Free South Africa Fund was an alternate repository for those who want to donate to University but opposed Stanford’s investment in South Africa-related companies. Donations to the South Africa Fund were to be withheld from Stanford until either the University completely divests from South African-related companies or black majority rule is achieved in South Africa. The Fund was initiated by graduate student Bill Handley and seniors Mike McFaul, Susan Rice and Laurie Edelstein.
