Yale Endowment for Divestment was formed had its first board meeting on September 8, 1986. Yale Endowment for Divestment was designed to provide alumni/ae with an opportunity indicate their dissatisfaction with Yale University’s investment policies and to complement student efforts to get Yale to divest from companies doing business in South Africa. Alumni/ae gifts were made to Yale Endowment for Divestment as an alternative of giving to Yale. The money was deposited in a socially responsible investment account and held in escrow until Yale divested or South Africa became unified state governed in accordance with the democratic principle of one person, one vote. If neither condition was met by Commencement Day 1991 the money would be released to organizations working with black South Africans against apartheid.
